The Winter Class

Brave the cold and discover the warmth and beauty of winter camping.

Much to your surprise a whole new world will open up to you in the winter season. The Winter Class has been called the winter appreciation class by students who have braved Mt. Shasta winters. While winter camping in Mt. Shasta, Klamath National Wildlife Refuge and Lava Beds National Park, students will learn what is needed to enter a snow country environment and live in relative comfort and safety.

Each environment offers a different Winter Experience. It is a truly wonderful time of year to be outside.

• Winter Survival Skills
• Nature Awareness
• Earth Philosophy
• Winter Shelters: snow caves, quinzhees, snow pits, igloos, bark tipis
• Fire Making: bow drill, hand drill, camp fires in the snow, wood gathering
• Hunting and Trapping; no animals will be harmed
• Winter Travel: snowshoeing, ice travel and more
• Observation and Identification of Wildlife: Ducks, geese, eagles, hawks, owls, songbirds, deer, antelope, porcupine, coyote, rabbits, squirrels, bobcats and mountain lion are all possible
• Tracking, Clothing, Body Control
