Bear

BEAR a true spirit guide on earth.

Bear has been my teacher of patience and unconditional love. He helped me to see what it is to live life with an open heart. He was always the first to greet people with pure joy and no preconceived judgments. Bear was truly sad whenever people would leave the land. He really missed our students when they had to go, and I know they missed him as well, as we would get a lot of fan mail for Bear, especially from our private school kids.

Bear was always the first one to tend to someone who was sad, shut down, hurt or just plain old shy. He connected immediately with people and got them to open up. No words needed, just love and an abundance of healing kisses.

Bear’s biggest love was small children. Whenever there was a baby or toddler in camp Bear was glued to their side and he would cry with joy when he saw them. He became their guardian and made sure they got extra attention.

My favorite walks with Bear were in the snow because he never failed to make me laugh every time he rolled around and made snow angels. After thrashing around for a bit he would all of a sudden stop and lay still on his back with a wild, euphoric look in his eyes, and truly smile just staring up at the sky.

The morning after Bear passed an eagle was calling out on the land. I heard it for a couple of hours, but I was busy doing chores. Finally my sister and I took the other dogs for a walk and I heard the eagle persistently calling out. Just past the target range in a huge fir tree was the Bald eagle. The dogs were roaming under the tree all around and the eagle was perfectly content just watching us below. I knew it was a special moment, but it wasn’t until later that day when I came back from town and the eagle was gone that I felt that it was Bear’s energy calling out and coming through that eagle. I really believe it was Bear’s way of visiting and letting me know he’ll be around whenever someone needs him.

I feel so much gratitude for having been his friend and to have been touched by such a gentle and kind soul.

I love you Bear and I will always miss our beautiful, big, brown eye boy.

good ol bear bear

Bear was the type of dog who everyone wish they had. He was full of energy and love. To me, he was more than just a dog, i would think most people would agree. If you came out of the sweat lodge and were just dying, Bear would make a B line straight too you and put his head on you, then you were ready to go for another round!!!!!! The school will not be the same without him, but we must remember. Bears spirit will live on through the land. When you are walking in the woods on a late summer night, he may just pay you a visit.

We'll miss you Bear

My son Tad has been an apprentice at the school over the years. Each time I visited the beautiful land at Headwaters, I was always greeted by the dogs. Of course, I immediately took to Bear. He was a special dog with an amazing personality. When Tad would come home from his summer stay, he always talked about the dogs. Bear was very dear to Tad's heart, which made him dear to mine as well. Bear had a great life surrounded by many who loved him. I am grateful for the short time I spent with him.
